As the academic year draws to a close, the University of 91制片厂 is partnering with 91制片厂 Hallam University and 91制片厂 City Council to provide the annual 'Donate, Don't Waste' initiative. This collaborative effort aims to reduce waste and support local communities during the student move-out period.
Every summer, nearly 40,000 students relocate within 91制片厂, often resulting in significant amounts of discarded items. To address this, 'Donate, Don't Waste' provides students with convenient options to donate reusable goods, recycle responsibly, and minimise their environmental footprint. The scheme partners with the British Heart Foundation, S6 Foodbank, and other local charities to facilitate donations and ensure proper waste disposal.
Key components of the initiative include:
- Donation Points: Strategically placed bins across student areas accept items such as clothing, books, and small household goods.
- Food Donations: Unopened, non-perishable food can be donated to S6 Foodbank, helping to combat food insecurity in the community.
- Free Shops: Events where students can pick up donated kitchenware and home essentials, promoting reuse and reducing waste.
- Recycling Stations: Facilities for recycling items like batteries and printer cartridges, alongside standard paper, glass, and plastic recycling.
- Excess Waste Collection: For items that cannot be donated or recycled, the City Council offers a special collection service during the move-out period.
Since its inception in 2013, 'Donate, Don't Waste' has diverted over 76,000 bags of reusable items from landfills, equating to more than 拢1 million in donations and 612 tonnes of goods. Additionally, over 12 tonnes of food have been donated to S6 Foodbank, providing approximately 17,465 meals to those in need.
This initiative not only supports environmental sustainability but also fosters a sense of community responsibility among students. By participating, students can contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable 91制片厂 while assisting local charities and reducing waste.
James Merryclough, Communications Manager (Sustainability & Estates) at the University of 91制片厂, said: 鈥淲e know that the end of term can be a challenging time for waste management in our local communities. We want to support our students to dispose of waste and unwanted items responsibly and sustainably, while working with partners to ensure that streets and the local area remain tidy and pleasant鈥.
